Italy Has A Secret: Unearth Calabria in Fall 2027

Calabria is filled with villages that gently recall yesteryear. The beauty of seaside Tropea with a monastery almost lost in the sea will haunt your memory.  Traveling the sometimes-tortuous roads can feel like a time warp. Diving into the impossibly blue waters and joining fishermen who comb the sea in an ancient search for the precious swordfish exhilarate beyond words. Discovering the Greek roots of this region through language, archeology, architecture, food, wine and crafts leaves you scratching your head, in the best way possible.

This women-only trip will explore the southwestern corner of Calabria. One unpack at our gorgeous seaside resort near iconic Tropea will leave us unencumbered by luggage and hotel transfers. We will be free to experience the region through all of our senses, in company with other women. History will unfold from many perspectives: gorgeous bronze figures retrieved from the local sea; ancient rituals, dances and music; Greek-influenced food; and numerous stories told by the locals. We’ll have the chance to find those perfect treats, likely handmade by Calabrian women. Our memories will be numerous and rich.

MON SEP 20 – DAY 1: A WEEK IN A SEASIDE HAVEN

Early afternoon transfer (about 75 minutes) provided from the Lamezia Terme airport to our elegant resort.

Your Calabrian adventure begins with arrival at the elegant Capovaticano Resort, beautifully located on one of the most spectacular stretches of the Tyrrhenian coast. The vibe is relaxed, stylishly tasteful, tranquil. After check-in, take time to settle into your surroundings and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the resort before gathering for a Welcome Dinner, where the authentic flavors of Calabria provide the perfect introduction to the week ahead.

TUES SEP 21 – DAY 2: FLAVORS, MUSIC AND CALABRIAN HOSPITALITY

Enjoy a leisurely morning at the resort, whether relaxing by the beach, plunging in the pool or simply embracing the slower pace of Southern Italy. This evening, immerse in authentic Calabrian culture with an unforgettable experience at Casa Comerci Winery. Here you’ll learn about the strong influence of the sea on these hardy grapes, tasting different expressions through a lineup of fine wines accompanied by local products. Traditional recipes, warm hospitality and live performances of the energetic Tarantella together with the evocative sounds of local shepherds’ music create an evening filled with genuine regional charm. WED SEP 22 – DAY 3: TROPEA – “PEARL OF THE TYRRHENIAN SEA”

After a leisurely morning, visit nearby Tropea, with its enticing historic center. The small city of Tropea is considered the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Famous for its white beaches, crystal-clear water, and picturesque old town perched on the cliffs, Tropea was named “most beautiful village in Italy” in 2021.

Legend says Tropea was founded by Hercules, and certainly graves have been found nearby that date from Magna Graecia times. Also interesting is Virgin Mary’s supposed protection of the town from disaster on multiple occasions. These include the 1783 Calabrian earthquakes (which barely touched Tropea) as well as the six bombs dropped on the city in WWII (which failed to explode). Time to visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola (jutting daringly into the sea — see our photos), shop, have lunch, photograph and wander independently through this coastal oasis.

Late today you’ll embark on a private boat excursion along Tropea’s spectacular Coast of the Gods. Discover hidden coves, white sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs rising above the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. B, snacks and drinks on the boat

 

THURS SEP 23 – DAY 4 : REGGIO CALABRIA: BRONZE WARRIORS AND A FISHERMAN’S VILLAGE

Start the day with breakfast by the sea, followed by a visit to Reggio Calabria, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a city rich in history and culture. The highlight will be a guided visit to the National Archaeological Museum, which showcases the Riace Bronzes (c. 460 BC). These ancient, life-size Greek statues are in a beautiful state of conservation, having been discovered at the bottom of the local sea only in 1972. The duo of a younger and more mature warrior stands on anti-seismic foundations in a climatically controlled room; they have become the modern symbol of Calabria.

After the museum, stroll along the seafront, enjoying views of the Strait of Messina all the way to Sicily’s Mount Etna. How about a scoop of the region’s best ice cream at a historic gelateria? You’ll be battling the locals for that!

On the way back we’ll stop in Scilla. This picturesque fishing community boasts zero cars; its houses are built right up to the sea. Scilla fairly oozes rustic Italian charm. Settle in at a delicious local seafood restaurant that hovers right over the water for lunch. Then stroll through Scilla’s charming alleys, visit the ancient Ruffo Castle, or relax on its beautiful beaches. Late afternoon return to the hotel and free evening. B, L

 

FRI SEP 24 – DAY 5 – TIMELESS TRADITIONS

Today you’ll discover the authentic soul of Calabria through its timeless traditions. Spend time at a local farm, diving into a hands-on experience in the art of cheesemaking. Conclude the visit with a delicious farm-to-table lunch featuring a guided tasting of locally produced cheeses and regional specialties. Return to the resort for some rest before enjoying a rich aperitivo at the exclusive Villa Paola, a beautifully restored 16th-century monastery overlooking Tropea. An evening for your cute clothes! SAT SEP 25 – DAY 6 – PIZZO: HOME OF THE TARTUFO GELATO

Enjoy a relaxing morning at the resort, whether by the beach, by the swimming pool or simply taking in the peaceful atmosphere of Capovaticano. Around midday, depart for the charming seaside town of Pizzo, where you’ll have free time to explore its picturesque historic center, browse local boutiques and, of course, taste the famous Tartufo Gelato, Calabria’s most iconic dessert.

Return to the resort for some R&R. In the evening, there’ll be a transfer to Tropea for those last-minute souvenirs. If you’d like, join Elizabeth and Claudia for a Dutch treat dinner at one of our favorites, Casa Romana in Tropea, the perfect way to toast our time together in the lively ambiance of this gorgeous town. SUN SEP 26 – DAY 7:  WELLNESS AND SWEET FAREWELL

Enjoy a leisurely morning at the resort, taking advantage of the renowned Thalasso Spa, relaxing by the sea. Life’s pace is slow here, and you’ll have this final chance to enjoy that today … explore and fully enjoy the beauty of Calabria.

In the afternoon, take part in a live Calabrian cooking demonstration, where local chefs will showcase the preparation of some of the region’s most beloved traditional dishes, sharing authentic recipes and culinary secrets passed down through generations. Following the demonstration, gather for a traditional farewell dinner, enjoying some of the dishes prepared during the experience alongside other regional specialties, the perfect celebration of an unforgettable journey through Calabria. MON SEP 27 – DAY 8: DEPARTURE – HOME OR ONWARD TRAVELS

Check-out after breakfast and transfer to Lamezia Terme Airport for onward travels, bidding farewell after this wonderful travel experience and filled with emotions, flavors, and unforgettable memories.
